14m old waking in the night - how do I get him back to sleep?

My 15mo is great at nap time and bed time. After a little sleep training he will now be put into the cot awake and fall asleep on his own within 5mins.

He has a morning nap 4hours after he has woken up in the morning and then goes to bed at night at 7pm after a routine of bath, cuddles, bottle, in the night garden.

He will sleep through 4nights out of 7 however the other 3 he will wake (any time from 10pm to 3am) and then struggle to go back to sleep. It can take at least an hour of controlled crying (no more than 3mins a time) cuddles, patting, more in the night garden a bottle etc.

What's the best technique to get them back to sleep?
