Magic tricks for getting newborn to sleep??

It's 6am and I've been up since 1am, before which I had a 2 hour stretch of sleep. My 12 day old baby will not go down in her crib! She breastfeeds go sleep, then as soon as I try and move her (regardless of how long I leave her asleep on me before trying to move her) she springs awake. She only wants to be on me, it's exhausting! Please help 😩

maybe crib is too cold?
we ended up putting a towel under the sheet to make it feel warmer.

congrats!

She's in her 4th trimester- have a look online and it explains why they want to be held and with you.
Also with my 12 day old who loves been held.
Make sure you sleep when baby sleeps, it's not ideal but it's what we need to do to ensure sleep at the moment.

Congratulations! We did:

T-shirt of mine I'd been wearing (so there was my smell close to her)
White noise
Swaddling

I know we used the t-shirt trick really early on but not the other things until about 6 weeks because we hadn't thought of them! Also spent a lot of time on daytime walks to get her to settle, it was really exhausting, I do remember it.

God this is exhausting isn’t it. We realised we needed to sort of recreate womb conditions really. Took a while to work that out! So-

-Tight swaddle - we used the miracle blanket as she wriggled out of anything else. This replicates the cramped, cosy womb (and your arms)

  • dummy - this is very soothing and saved my nipples as DD wanted to comfort feed constantly
  • white noise
  • gently patting her chest whilst in her crib / basket, in a heartbeat rhythm

Hope things settle a bit soon, this bit is rough!

Cuddles.

You will train baby to sleep in cot gradually. Not yet!

Read about the 4th trimester.

No advice but just wanted to say hang in there. Thanks

Forgot about dummy! Gave that at 2 weeks. Was quite worried about getting rid of it, but it was fine in the end.

And don't forget that whatever you choose to do now, you'll be conditioning her to expect to happen. So don't make it a hard routine for you to try and change from later.. If you can just plonk her down, that'll be great!

We were given a 'swaddle up' and started using it around 3/4weeks and it was amazing!

Also white noise was great, we still use it now at 17m.

Sunflower40 · 20/05/2020 07:01

Sorry to jump in, what white noise app/ toy do you all recommend? Thanks!

beargrass · 20/05/2020 08:36

@Sunflower40

The sound sleeper app.

The myhummy bears are expensive but very good especially if white noise is needed when you are sending them into nursery.
