Any ideas to help get 18mo to lie down nicely in cot at sleep time?

Currently DH and I sit in the room with him on a stool away from the cot, minimal interaction, while he goes to sleep. Unfortunately he has a bit of an anxiety about us leaving him and will get very upset if we do, so hey ho, we sit there. He's sleeping through when he goes down, napping well etc - it's just the mucking around in the cot before he goes to sleep.

He sits up, rolls over, does what appears to be some yogic positions, chatters, stands up, throws dummy out etc etc.

At nap time, this is usually for 20-30 mins, at bedtime (7pm) it is 40mins to an hour.

I'm happy with nap times and sleep times etc, I'm just wondering if there's anything I could try to add to keep him occupied while he winds down that would get him off quicker - we already have white noise machine.

I wondered, like one of those bedtime story recording things, or one of those things that projects stars on the ceiling that might keep his attention away from mucking around and he could look at until he fell asleep... idk! Any thoughts?
