Is it possible to sleep train for the first time at 17 months old?

We have never done any sleep training and he never sleeps through the night. He’s never slept through the night not once.

Now he’s 17 months old I just assumed it would be getting naturally better. It really, really isn’t.

He’s now very very active, very independent and I cannot imagine how I’d sleep train him now, I feel like he’s just climb up the cot, run around the cot, get himself really worked up and the whole thing will be really traumatic for us all! That’s how I predict it will go anyway!

Does anyone have any experience of sleep training for the first time at a similar age and if so, any advice?

I am wanting to do a gentle approach.

Please help! I need sleep 😴
