6 month old fighting sleep

I am a ftm (a very anxious one at that ) to a 6 month old DS . He has never been the easiest baby to help to sleep. He has fought sleep most of his short life but the last few weeks he has taken it to the next level. Bedtime has turned into a 2 hour screaming battle where he will snuggle down and half fall asleep for 30 seconds with rocking or patting or sometimes just his dummy but then something will switch and he will through himself back and start crying.
We have tried putting him down to see if we would go off on his own he just kicked his legs and played with his dummy until he got over tired and it was even harder to get him to sleep. We had made the room dark , lullabies playing even bought a projector to maybe help him drift off nothing has helped. In the end I either fed him to sleep(I worry this makes him more spit up more than he already does) or his passes out from exhaustion. During the day I can get him to sleep in a baby carrier and my DH is suggesting that we use this for bedtime also.
I am worried about doing it wrong about creating habits that I can’t sustain. Does anyone have any tips to help me get my baby to sleep without the screaming.
