My 5month old baby just won’t sleep right through?

Hi guys, I’m after a little bit of advice and guidance if possible.
I’m wondering how I encourage my son to sleep through the night as I’m wanting him to be sleeping through before he goes into his own bedroom.
He wakes anything from 6.20am and we get up. He has an hour nap around 8am until 9am. He then has a bottle of 8ozs. He then has a yoghurt/rusk at 11am.
He’ll nap around 12 for about 15-20 mins.
Again he’ll cue for a feed at 1. He’ll have a bottle and some puréed veg.
We’ll play until he’s tired and hungry. He will then nap around 4.30 until 5, hell then have a feed.
We’ll play or go for a walk and bath at 7pm-7.30pm and then I’m trying my hardest to keep him awake past 8pm. We even had him awake past 9 one night this week and he still woke up.
I have tried him with a rusk before bed which seems to help him go that little bit longer but he’s still waking at 3-4.30. I’ll feed him and put him down and then he wakes at 6.

I totally understand that sleeping from anything past 8 until 6 is brilliant but it’s not right through? I don’t mind getting up at 5am if he sleeps right through as I can expect him to sleep for long periods of time. Thanks x

Sleep breeds sleep in my opinion. My DS is 5 months and has 3 naps a day. 2, 1 hour naps and 1, 2 hour. He goes to "bed" at 7 (he sleeps in the lounge on me until I go to bed) and wakes at 5am for a feed. If he misses a nap hes up at 2/3am for a feed.

I think that for a five month old baby waking for a feed once in the night would be good. I agree don't keep him up late as he's doing very well.

I think at that age DD was still having 2 night feeds, one at 11 and one at 3ish. She kept the 11pm dream feed until she was about 13/14 months. I don’t think many 5 month olds sleep through the night I’m afraid

There is loads of conflicting studies on weaning before 6 months, positives and negatives (although all state that milk should remain the primary source of nutrition); but personally I don't agree with feeding more to help sleep, as that's not how it works anyway! All babies are different, as long as they are given the opportunity to nap when tired etc most of it is 'luck' rather than anything else. It's normal for a baby to wake at that age, the same as for some it's normal and safe to sleep through.

Fairly standard routine at 5 months is
Up at 7am, bottle
Nap 9-10am
11am bottle
Nap 12.30-2.30pm
3pm bottle
Nap 4.30-5pm
6pm bottle
7pm bed
10pm dreamfeed and keep the dream feed until solids well established including protein. Totally standard for babies to wake for a nightfeed until they are properly on solids. A dreamfeed can help but not always.

majesticallyawkward · 02/05/2020 13:53

@GenevaMaybe is 5 bottles standard? It's been a while since I bottle fed but I remember using all of ours bottles in any 24 hour period so maybe 8-10 a day?

Bf dc2 now and he's having minimum 10-12 feeds in a 24 hour period.

That's not a criticism at all, genuinely curious- and slightly jealous of anyone in a routine with a 5 month old!

Abouttimemum · 02/05/2020 15:49

@majesticallyawkward my DS ate every 3 hours at five months, approx 6.30, 9.30, 12, 3, 5.45pm (bedtime bottle) I never dream fed.
He had big 8oz bottles though. So 5 8oz bottles a day. I guess they’re all different!

Oh my god...my daughter woke up every 45 minutes until she was 8 months! I think you’re doing amazingly x

Willow4987 · 02/05/2020 16:54

@majesticallyawkward DS1 was on about 5 bottles a day at that age also

Maybe I make greedy babies 😂 had a 4 hour stretch of sleep last night and although I felt like a new woman my boobs were so sore I then questioned whether this 'long sleep' was worth it (it was, 4 whole hours! 🤩)

Dc1 is 5 now and still eats every few hours....

I haven’t read the whole thread so may have been said but I would try and get a much Ionger lunchtime nap. Maybe shorten morning nap if you need to. I used to do 930-10 morning nap, 1230-230ISH lunch nap then a short afternoon nap up till around 8months (around 4, 20 mins ish). Sleep leads to more sleep in my experience and I would say he needs more sleep during the day. Saying that his night sleep does sound very good already! Keeping him up later won’t make him sleep through either ime as then he’ll be overtired and wake more.
