5 month old sleep problems

I have a 5 month old. We have a consistant nap and bedtime routine however at night his sleep varies hugely. It is so frustrating becuase I know he can sleep well but around 50% of the time it is terrible.

He is put down awake but sleepy between 7 and 8pm. On around half of nights he will wake 2 times for a breastfeed before waking up at 6am which is great.

On the other half of nights he will sleep 3 hours initially and is then up every hour until 6am.

I cannot work out why his sleep varies so much. On the nights his sleep is poor we are not doing amything differently that I am aware of.

Does anyone have any ideas? Has anyone else experienced this?

I am in the exact same position and ive come to terms with the fact that babies are tiny demons designed to be as unpredictable as possible.

As my husband said at 3am last night "she's lucky she smells so good, otherwise she'd be sleeping in the shed"
