Cot to cot bed help!!!

My DS is 19 months old and I'm 32 weeks pregnant, I wanted the cot (selfishly) for the babies room to be finished and I thought that whilst we are all in lockdown it wouldn't matter if he didn't sleep so well.

Anyway, once he's asleep, he's out for the night. No problems at all but getting him to sleep is a completely different ball game! He always used to go into his cot awake and happy, chat for a while to himself then drift off. Now he is crying before we even mention bedtime and refuses to lay in the bed and then cries at the gate on his door. The first 4 nights he took himself back to bed after about 20 minutes and fell asleep by himself but then the last two nights it's been nearly 45 minutes and he's worked up into such a state so one of us sits beside him til he falls asleep 😩 I just don't know how to go forward!?

He seemed to be making good progress as each night it was less and less but all of a sudden something changed and he totally lost it. Also, daytime naps used to be the same. Put him in and leave him - although he did fight these more but recently I'm home alone and I can't bear to listen to him cry on my own so I've been patting him off? Maybe I started the bad habit? Aaah I don't know 😭
