Need help with controlled crying

Tried controlled crying last night with my 8 month old as he usually has to be rocked to sleep & usually ends up in my bed during the night which I really want to stop!

So it went pretty well - I kept going in to lie him back down & put his dummy in and eventually he slept. Every time he woke crying, I did the same again until it got to 4am! He wouldn't go back then & usually is up for the day at 5 so I ended up putting him in with me to ensure I had at least an extra hour sleep 🙈 (I know I shouldn't have)

Does anyone have any advice on what to do if this happens again? Or maybe I'm doing something wrong? I want to keep going until eventually I can put him down for naps awake and leave him to fall asleep by himself.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. I've never done this before 😊
