my 3 week old won’t sleep for more than 1 hour

Hello, hoping to get some help for myself as a first time mom. My newborn is 3 weeks old and I can’t seem to get him to sleep for more than 1 hour during the day and at night. The max he will sleep for any given time is 1.5-2 hours. I would feed him, hold him sometimes rock him until he seems tired then put him down on the crib. He would almost always fight being placed in the crib so then we would pick him up cuddle him and try to put him back in the crib again. Once we successfully put him in the crib he will sleep for an hour and wakes up crying again. What am I doing wrong? Im afraid he is not getting enough sleep as they say newborns should be sleeping 14-18 hours a day. Im worried that it will affect his health. Also its been exhausting for my hubby and I for only getting a few hours of sleep a day for the last 3 weeks! Please help

It is perfectly normal for babies to wake a lot, though I understand it is very hard to cope with. You could try holding him in your arms whilst he naps or put him in a baby carrier.

At night, have you tried bed sharing with him? I suspect he wants to be cuddled up to you and that comfort may help him sleep longer. Look up the safe 7 which explains how to do this safely.

We bed shared with our twins from 3 to 6 months because they wouldn’t stay asleep in their cribs. It really helped!

Bed sharing or take it in turns to hold baby while the other sleeps (if BF, daddy just brings baby for boob then takes away to burp/ change/ comfort/ cuddle)

That's babies for you!! My daughter is 8 months old and still wakes up a lot in the night 😴😴

D2 is doing this now albeit intermittently. On the nights that she just wont sleep we just co sleep, not for everyone I know. I let her sleep on my chest and she goes about 3 to 4 hours.
Hope you find something that works

Perfectly normal and natural newborn behaviour I'm afraid! It's so hard but it passes. Drink lots of tea!
