Start nursery soon- cry it out method?

I’m in a bit of a pickle, just wanted to know what you’d do. For months my baby was a terrible sleeper, but now he wakes up once or twice at night.. he usually sleeps a 8 or 9hr stretch then wakes for a feed and back to sleep again. I’ve never been able to just leave him in his cot, walk away and him go to sleep by himself. At night I always have to breastfeed * pat and rock then put to sleep... for his naps I just pat and rock and put to sleep. He starts nursery in 4 weeks time and I’m worried how he’ll be able to get to sleep on his own. Would it be best to start sleep training via cry it out method? I didn’t want to do that until last resort. I’ve tried the gentle sleep training and even though he’s much better than before, he can never go to sleep without my help or without breastfeeding. I don’t mind waking once or twice at night, I’m just worried how he’ll be able to sleep without his usual whilst at nursery
