Getting baby used to arms outside of swaddle???

My 12 week old DS has been in an ergo pouch since birth.
He’s moving round lots now so we felt the time had come to take arms out. He’s been sooooo unsettled the past couple of nights! Any advice on how to help him with adjustment? X

Take one arm out and leave the other arm in. Alternate arms for a few days until you can keep both out

Thats what Gina ford says anyway

We did the one arm in one out, then the other one out, before both out but we waited a bit longer than you. Maybe 5 months-ish. For more than one reason:

  1. Baby wasn't rolling over yet so no need to have arms free
  2. baby slept sooo well swaddled I was a bit terrified to change anything
  3. at 12 weeks she still had a strong moro reflex and poor arm control so found waiting until she could control her arms better meant she was less likely to whack herself in the face and wake herself up.

Gradual weaning is usually the easiest but don't worry too much if your baby isn't ready yet, as long as they can't roll back to front.

My baby is 6.5 months and only in the last few weeks have we managed to stop swaddling (was using love to dream swaddle and he still doesnt roll back to front). We used the love to dream transition bag where you can zip one arm off and did this for a few days, then took both arms out and now we are in a normal sleeping bag. His startle reflex was too strong to try this earlier though.

I swaddled until 6 months when he started to show signs of rolling over 😂 it can take a while for them to grow out of the arm reflex. I think we just went cold turkey and it was fine after about a week, then he started sleeping on his side

So I have done it too early? Problem is he moves a lot at night and I’m scared he’ll end up in a dangerous position that he won’t be able to get out of on his own! X
