Too young for a bed?

Last night we tried DD in a bed (we converted her cot by taking the side down). She is 2 years and 2 months. She was excited at first but then took a long time to actually get to sleep as she kept climbing out. She eventually settled, but 2 hours later woke up with a bust nose and blood all over her face! I think she had fallen out :( We cleaned her up and gave her cuddles, but she wouldn't settle back into bed until we gave up and put the side back on to make it into a cot and then slept fine. Did we try too soon? How old were your toddlers when they moved into a bed? I have a feeling DD won't be ready any time soon. :S
