Recently taken dummy away

Hi,
My nearly 3 year old has had a dummy for sleeping only. And he’s a brilliant sleeper, in fact it’s a struggle getting him up in the morning.
Decided to take his dummy away. Only been a few days and he’s had a grumble but seems to be going off to sleep ok, however he is waking in the night now and can’t re-settle.
He’s not asking for his dummy but he just isn’t going back to sleep. Without a lot of shushing and being in the room with him.

Question is, do I keep doing the shushing and staying with him while he adjusts to the change or is that turning one problem into another?! Or do I let him have a cry about it and leave him?
(Bearing in mind, shushing and staying with him took AGES last night, like a couple of hours in total. He just wouldn’t go back to sleep)
Thanks
