Help or extra sleep needed

Hello everyone

I'm getting a bit cranky and me and my DS (19 months) are not getting any sleep!!!! Little man goes to bed between 8 or 9pm and has a nap between 2 and until 4. Falls asleep when put in bed within 10 minutes so no problem there.
Problem is: he wakes up at 3 or half 3 and stays up for 2 or 3 hours, is tired but refuses to sleep and then falls asleep until half 8 or 9 in the morning.
At the moment I co sleep with him when he wakes up and I get kicked and pulled on my hairs etc so no sleep for me either. I tried leaving him in the bed but that smart little guy knows I'm awake so he'll start crying.
This has been going on now for 2 weeks and soon 3 weeks. What can I do?? He still sleeps in our bedroom and I'm more tired than ever during the morning and afternoons. Any ideas anyone??
I said to DH to put him in his own room but he says he's too young for that Hmm

8/9 sounds really quite late to be going to bed at that age, is he overtired?

Have you tried dropping the afternoon nap?

Think own room would be better

Peaches2018 · 12/01/2020 15:38

I know I find 9 also late but if he wakes up at 4 there's no way he'll go to sleep at 8.
Well today he's dropping his nap but I thought he was a bit too young for that and I've noticed as well that he gets tired a lot around 6 if he doesn't nap.
I think own room would be better too, definitely going to bring it up again with DH

The afternoon nap is the only nap he's having btw, he dropped his morning nap around 14 months old

My son is 16 months and doesn’t nap because it resulted in waking at bedtime.

He gets tired at 6, in bed by 6:30 and wakes up between 6-7am

PPopsicle · 12/01/2020 16:52

Also, he is on 3 meals and 2 snacks a day?

Peaches2018 · 12/01/2020 18:37

@PPopsicle wow that sounds really good. My LO is on 3 meals a day and mostly 2 snacks, sometimes not. He skipped his nap today so he'll be up soon in bed with his night bottle he still wants to have.
Does your LO wakes up on his own or do you wake him up? I mostly let mine wake up on his own in the morning before the night waking started.
Mine also recently started to walk (albeit very wobbly) on his own without holding any furniture and I think that might have something to do with it as well as developmental leaps tend to wake him up Confused

Try him in his own room.

PPopsicle · 12/01/2020 19:58

I never wake mine up in the morning. The only time I wake him up is whether is has an unexpected nap and I don’t let him nap past 3pm

Peaches2018 · 13/01/2020 10:01

So your LO wakes up by himself around that time? That's really good!!
I had another dreadful night, DS up and about at exactly 3.20 till almost 6am. Eventually I didn't have any strength left so I put him in his bed with the monitor on, walked out of our room and he was asleep 10 minutes laterShock!!!!!! Woke him up at 9 otherwise he would still be asleep now I know that for sure. I'll be on a high dose of caffeine for today that's for sureConfused

I think you need to start waking him up at 7am, his body clock will be all over if he isn’t waking until 9

Onemorecrisp · 13/01/2020 19:18

Up at 7am in bed 7-7.30pm, own room.
Wouldn’t be dealing with this at 19months.

2-4 also seems quite late if he needs a nap should be around lunchtime, easier if awake at 7.

Peaches2018 · 16/01/2020 12:10

Well we've put him in his own room and the first night he was down around 8.15 and fell asleep about an hour later. Woke up the next morning around 7 and everyone had a good sleep! Missed his afternoon nap, couldn't sleep and ended up in bed and asleep within minutes at 7.15! Woke up at 4 and threw the biggest fit, ended up almost throwing upSad and SO upset that it took a long time to calm him down. Eventually he ended up next to me in bed and we woke up at half 8 🤦🏼‍♀️
Really not sure how to break this cycle of waking up. It seems after 9 hours of sleep he now wakes up but that's not enough for the night I thought
