3yo won’t sleep, scared of monsters and ghosts

Over the last week or so, despite being exhausted from nursery, we put him to bed following bath, story, cuddles around 1900-1930 and he will be awake until 2100. Shouting out for me or daddy, sometimes he’s upset other times it’s more of a whiny tone or he sounds normal and will tell us “it’s morning mummy”.

However occasionally he will mention monsters and ghosts, this morning he was telling me they are in his room and he wouldn’t let me go back in to get his clothes once he woke up. He already has a night light, and a leapfrog toy which reads out stories to him and projects stars on the ceiling. He sleeps with some teddies, and several books which he often “reads” to himself via his nightlight before he lies himself down to go to sleep. Recently he refused to wear a jumper and freaked out because it had a silly monster on the front that he said was scary.

OH thinks he’s just playing up and going through a defiant phase but I’m not sure.

Could he have just watched Monsters Inc?

Or maybe you could watch the last good bits , to show monsters are good.
