17 Month old won't self settle

My 17 month old DS will not self settle in the cot. I have to get him to sleep on me before putting him in the cot. He will then sleep a couple of hours and be up again and won't settle until he's in my bed. He is currently still In the same room as me but will soon be moving into his own room. Are there any techniques I can try to get him to self settle or at least stay in his cot longer? I tried to let him cry it out but he gets so worked up until he's sick. Thanks in Advance

Hi tiredmummy, I know what you're going through. My DD was similar. I just used to get her nice and calm with a cuddle and songs and then put her in the cot and sit by the cot holding her hand. She was not happy about it for the first few nights, but I never left her side until she fell asleep. After a few nights, she knew the new routine and just lay down and went to sleep (albeit still holding my hand!). It took a little longer before she was completely self settling but at least she was going to sleep in her own cot without any upset. This was also when she started to sleep through. It did help loads though when we put her in her own room. She was a similar age to your DS.
