Waking up screaming

Sorry for the long post!

My son is almost 9 months old and has never really slept through other than the odd night but used to only get up once or twice a night for his dummy. 2 weeks ago he got scarlet fever and was really poorly so I ended up sleeping on the floor in the nursery for 2 nights to be with him.

Since then his sleeping has been awful. He is waking up in the middle of the night screaming and the minute I go in he stops. The second I go out the door again he starts screaming (and I don't mean just crying but blood curdling screaming). He is much better and finished all his antibiotics so I don't think there is anything physically wrong with him.

Last night I tried to let him cry it out but after an hour I ended up going in and rubbing his back until he fell asleep but this happened twice and took over an hour each time to settle him.

I put him to bed at 7pm tonight and he has already been up 3 times with the last time taking 45 mins to settle

Any advice? I'm really strunggling with the lack of sleep!!
