Toddler night tantrum- in sleep

Toddler screaming as if having a tantrum, about very everyday things (last night it was, "I want to get the broccoli, I want to get the broccoli..." on repeat). He is definitely asleep when I go in but can't snap out of it on his own and waking him up is usually the only way to stop it (I let him try and work through it himself first, stroke back etc). It's usually around 4am. Then once he's awake he's awake.
Thankfully it is not happening often- maybe once every 2 months, but usually a couple of days in a row. Anyone know what this is all about?
