One year old's sleep

My DS turned one last week. Until recently he was sleeping fairly well through the night 6.30pm-6.30/7ish with one lunchtime nap of about 1.5-2hrs (he won't do a morning nap - we've tried and nursery has tried!).

About 3 weeks ago he got a nasty virus/cold during which he occasionally struggled to breathe, coughed himself awake, etc. and I ended up bringing him into bed with me as it was the only way either of us got any sleep (I work full-time).

He's now recovered and he goes down happily in his cot, but if he wakes during the night (usually sometime between 1 and 4 am) he won't settle at all except in bed with me. He does try to self-settle and sometimes drops off for a minute or so but then he wakes up crying again.

Are there any other options except wait it out and hope it resolves on its own, or gentle sleep training (we did this before with him when he wouldn't go down at all in his cot)?

I know he might need a later bedtime soon, but at the moment he's so exhausted after nursery that keeping him awake until 6.30 is a struggle.
