How to sleep train at 3am!

I'd love some advice! We've decided to start sleep training our 10 month old using controlled crying. We've been co-sleeping for months but I am not getting much actual sleep and now I'm back to work, we all need more sleep! The controlled crying seems to be going in the right direct at bedtime and for naps but when he wakes at 3am, he can keep going for nearly 2 hours, and I then have to get up at 6.30 so I am exhausted! Last night he woke at 3 and we tried going in every few minutes until 4.30 when we gave up and he came in with my husband. I felt awful and like all that crying was for nothing.

How do others keep going with the controlled crying at that time of the night? I don't know any other way to help him settle himself at night, I still feed him once a night but that doesn't calm him, and we've previously tried more gentle methods to no avail. Please help!
