Cot bed to bed

I was wondering when to take the side of the cot bed off to make it into a toddler bed. My lo is 17 months old and has started trying to climb out. Also, did you move on to using a duvet once it was a bed and do I need to pit something on the floor incase he rolls out? Thanks

I started using a thin duvet from 13 months so well before he was in a bed. Toddler bed is very low so if you have carpets your probably don't need to put something down, although I did just because I was worried.
We took the sides off when he was around 20 months but he never tried to climb out before so we never felt the need. The only reason we did was we redecorated his room.

Do you think your DC will stay in bed? How does he sleep at the moment?

I think the general advice is once they can climb over you need to take the sides off as it's quite far to fall compared to a toddler bed so if he is climbing up, definitely get them off

Brilliant, thank you for your advice. I dont think he could get over the side yet but wont risk it so its coming off today. We have wooden floors and rugs so will put something soft down. We are lucky as he has always been a brilliant little sleeper so hopefully this wont change. I guess a duvet is better than a sleeping bag incase he does get up and try to come in to us.

One tip; instead of getting a cotbed-sized duvet get a single one and put it on sideways with the wall side tucked in - it saves a lot of going in to put the duvet back onto a cold child who has kicked it onto the floor!

You can also get sleeping bags where the feet stick out (vaenait does them up to 7 years old) which is another good option.
