Hi

I am worried my 9 week old daughter is sleeping too much. Please can you let me know the typical sleep patterns I.e wake up time, nap times during day, length of naps, last nap time of the day and bed time with how many times awake during night

I am going to keep track of her naps/sleeps the next few days but I am interested to hear of others nap and sleep routines at this age.

Thanks

Hi,

My 9 week old’s day is roughly;

8am wake up, feed
9.30 nap 1 hour
11.00 feed
12.30 nap 40 minutes
13.30 feed
14.00 2 hour nap
4pm - 8pm feed/ catnap
8pm - 10.30pm sleep
10.30pm feed
11pm - 4.30am sleep
4.30am feed 1 hour
5.30am - 8am sleep

That’s the first time I’ve written it down and it’s really helpful to see. I’m breastfeeding and he still feeds every 2 - 3 hours during the day but then I get a stretch of sleep at night. During the day I try to keep in mind, that they should only be awake for 90 minutes at a time. I also aim to get at least 1 long nap a day which is normally while I’m out in pram or sling but we still have lots of frequent short naps. Hope this helps, although they are all different and I wouldn’t worry about too much sleep!

Can I ask what you feel is too much?

Newborns sleep a LOT, I think my DS could only do about 45 mins -1hr max awake at a time and then would nap for over an hour.

As a mother of a 6 month old who still seems to be in the throes of the 4 month sleep regression, I miss those early days where all he did is sleep!

Seriously though, as a first time mum I also remember the constant worry about what’s ‘normal’ so don’t ever feel bad about asking questions and listening to your instincts Smile

My dd slept a LOT at 9 weeks. She'd have the odd hour of awake time throughout the day, but was also then sleeping 12 hours through at night, without seeming to compensate for that in the day. I worried it was too much but, for me, as long as she was content and alert/bright when she was awake, I knew she was ok.

If it helps, that much sleeping didn't last long!! Between 3-4 months she started waking more again during the night and spends hours at a time awake in the day. Also breastfed.

And do ask your health visitor if you're concerned - I did, felt RIDICULOUS asking if it was ok for her to sleep through the night so much, but they were really helpful!
