Baby not settling after first and last sleep cycle.

My little man is 5 months this Friday, now for a while he's been waking up from nap after 40 mins and sometimes 40 mins after bedtimes. I go and resettle him, sometimes I leave him a chance to self settle,( but at naps it sleep time suicide as he wakes up and refuses to nap) once I've done it the once he'll sleep on and stir every 40 to 50 mins and selfsettle by sucking his fingers or touching his face. At nighttime by 5:40 he starts stirring like crazy, maybe wake up and be settled easily by me (he doesn't like mornings, he we more than likely take you up on the chance for a lie in as long as he doesn't fully rouse)
I'm just a tad baffled by it all. I watch him on the monitor at night and naps and once he's in sleep cycle two he's okay. He uses a dummy a lot to get to sleep, especially for when I resettle him but he can and does going to sleep without it, either with a cuddle, sucking his toy, in the pram, in the car, or by babbling until he closes his eyes (not 100% effective). By the end of the second cycle the dummy is normally spat out with force! I've found them across the room!
I'm trying to figure out why that first cycle always gets him and how to fix it, he does very well the rest of the times.

How is he getting to sleep? Mine used to do this when I was putting him down drowsy but awake. I started putting him down awake and he stopped doing it.
