Almost 8 month old doesnt sleep at night

Last night was truly awful! Can you die of sleep deprivation?
My nearly 8 month old slept fine the first part of the night as always , but after we’d come to bed, he stirred. I fed him (im breastfeeding) as he hadn’t had much after his bath (he normally has more).
He fell asleep and put him into his cot. He stayed asleep for 10 mins, maybe less and started bawling his eyes out! We didn’t pick him up, just stroked and shushed him through the bars. This made no difference. He seemed in pain (maybe teeth?) so gave him calpol. Tried again to get him to sleep...it didn’t happen.
Fast forward to the rest of the night, long story short he woke every 45 mins to an hour crying. My eyes are actually hurting and I have a headache. Now he’s laying next to me in our bed blowing raspberries and making mumuma sounds.

I’m really considering some form of sleep training although i know it’s frowned upon.
I would have left him if he was just whinging/moaning but he was properly crying.

Can anyone help? I’m losing it now. And going back to work soon.

Offering solidarity. I have a 12 month old who thinks waking up at 3am for an hour or two is bliss. Confused He also wakes to be bf throughout the night.

If I were you I'd try and do some gentle sleep training. I never did and suddenly ds has become a stubborn toddler.
