can't lay my ds down without him wakin? help

my ds is threeekks old and as soon as he is asleep i go to lay him down and he always wake how can i get him to sleep layin down and not on me?? many thanks

wait about 6 weeks.... it's very early days. its exhausting to have to hold them so much but dont worry about forming bad habits or anything like that. just do whatever (safely) works for now. my dd slept on her reclining bouncer seat with no problem (though never her cot), so i often spent the night on the sofa next to her. it will pass, he'll get the idea of his cot soon enough. good luck!

Have you tried propping ds up so he is not lying flat? I had a wedge pillow that I used during pg and this was ideal under the mattress. Sometimes they have a headache when laying down flat. My dd would never lay down flat until I took her to a cranial osteopath and the same day she laid down flat no problem. Something to do with pressure in her head.....worked for us!!

I found that pulling blankets/sheets over them woke them and switched to using a grobag. it was much better. Try a gentle patting action once they are on the mattress and start to stir...

i am having the same problem with
my 3.5 week old. i end up co-sleeping at night as moving him after a feed always wakes him.

i read today that one reason they wake is that they become aware of their bodyweight and it startles them. i try lowering him gradually, keeping my hands behind him for a while so he takes his weight slowly, and then keeping a hand on his chest and shushing. sometimes works, but not often. we also give him a dummy, which tends to relax him, but again, not every time.

look forward to hearing any advice from others. i can't just let him sleep on me in day as i have a 2.7 year DD to look after.

i put a phone book under the moses basket - ds doesnt seem to like being flat. like balletmum, i also tried cranial osteopath..which works a treat (£18/hr i consider well worth it!).
also swaddling helps as it stops him bashing himself when he startles!

I agree with dinky - swaddling can really help. I think because they're wrapped up so tightly and cosily, there's less of a contrast when you put them down, so it might be worth a try.

DS3 is 8 weeks old and we had this problem for a while - now we feed him (either breast or bottle doesn't make any difference which now - although he was more difficult to 'sort' with breast) with a blanket/sheet underneath him, sort of swaddled but not really. We then put him down, with the blanket in his cot/carrycot and he sleeps.......he seemed to find the change of temp a bit scary and wake up - but already having warmed up the blanket that goes under him he's much happier.

I have this problem with DD 7 weeks old, however she hates being swaddled scream fits are us however I can get her to sleep on my breast feeding pillow in the middle of the bed! Which I use for her day time naps but of an evening I can't get her in her moses basket for love or money! Sometimes she will stay 10-15mins...

Any other suggestions other than swaddling? I am making an appoint for a cranial obsetrician (Sp) next week to try to sort out her colic before she had colic I could get her in the moses basket! at night currently we are co-sleeping not idea
