9 year old's sleep problems

My 9 yr old dd (actually 10 next month), has started sleeping very badly in the last month. We had a busy summer, including a trip to the States and it started just after we got back (she has never been a problem sleeper before and has coped well with jet lag). She is waking at least 4 times a night and finds is difficult to get back to sleep on her own - I can be back and forth to her room for 2 hours. This has been going on for nearly 4 weeks and we are desperate! So tired we are letting her sleep with us (she has never done this before). Tried melatonin for 4 nights last week but it had no effect. Any ideas anyone?
