Surviving 18mo sleep regression?!

For the last two weeks, my son's sleep has gone to shit. He's almost 18 month old, and after some sleep training (controlled crying) back in October, we've had a happy sleeper who can self-settle day and night and sleep through. But that changed a fortnight ago, and he now cries as soons he goes anywhere near his cot. Frantic googling suggests sleep regression associated with separation anxiety and FOMO. How best to handle? Try some controlled crying again? Wait for it to pass?! How can I reassure him that he's not being abandoned?! Currently cuddling to sleep and then putting him down, which I know is naughty.

I don't have any advice I'm afraid but I'd like to follow.

I have a 19 month old who has always been a sleeper but he has started sleeping through the night which is great but he just won't go down easily - he never really has tbh but it's never been this bad and I'm at the point where it's making me mistersble and not a nice human to be around.

As they say..sure it's just a phase..but when is this bloody phase going to be over!
