Sleep regression

So my little one is going through his four month sleep regression and I was just wondering if anyone could help educate me a little. What I've been told about it and what I've researched in my own has taught me that it's a permanent change to his sleeping pattern and it can be the start of teaching baby how to sleep without the aid of mum or dad. However my son can already fall asleep in his own and I was just wondering how the sleep regression would affect that? Will he still be able to fall asleep on his own or will I have to teach him again? And will he gradually go back to sleeping longer stretches or is that something I'll have to teach again too? Just curious.

I’m going to be following because I have the same questions. Mine has gone from self settling and sleeping half a night straight to hourly wake ups and crying when head touches the pillow.

Exactly what my little ones been doing! He seems to still be able to fall asleep on his own but he will wake up crying so regularly during the night
