Three months old naps only half an hour!

My 3 months old naps for half an hour only, never longer, and manages to stay awake for an hour to hour and half max, and it is not like he falls asleep easily, so it feels like I am all day just putting him to sleep
Tried to get him back to sleep every time he wakes up, and tried to forcefully stretch his wake time hoping he will sleep more, no luck
At nights he can manage 3-4 hours stretch with no problems

And with a demanding older 3 year old sister, life is become very difficult

My now 5 month old has been doing this since about 8 weeks. Tried everything but have had to accept it for now as she’s not budging!

Only advice I could give is maybe try pram napping? Mine now has gone from needing to be walked around the park for naps to being popped in the pram in the kitchen with Snoozeshade and white noise on and nodding off on her own, 4 x 30 mins daily. Might free up some short stretches for you?

Mind you, mine won’t be fed/rocked/cuddled to sleep - has to be allowed to self-settle in pitch black with white noise - so if you have a reliable way to get him to sleep like one of those maybe you could try it as soon as he starts to stir?

My grandson has only ever slept 30 mins at a time. He is 6 months old now and has slept well at night for ages.

Thank you all for your comments
But are they well rested and happy when they wake up
My son is the morning, but towards the end of the day he is tired and cranky, so I worry he is not getting much rest

My boy was the same from 3 months still the same now at 8.5 months. But he does really well at night and now has two naps a day (30/40min)
I felt like I was constantly getting him to sleep when his wake time was only 1.5hours it was so knackering but I thought if he sleeps well at night I am happy.

I do remember he seemed cranky towards the end of the day yes he can be now but I thought that was quite normal? I don't know.

Booboo5 · 23/04/2019 07:27

Yes he seems well rested when he wakes up and in a good mood but I always think surely 30 min isn't enough when I read babies should have a couple of hours

SoyDora · 23/04/2019 07:30

My 15 week old is the same. My first two children also did this, and naps didn’t start to lengthen until around the 6 month mark so I’m just waiting for that really.

SoyDora · 23/04/2019 07:33

It’s normal to be tired and cranky towards the end of the day.

Scorpion1984 · 23/04/2019 08:23

Thank you all for your comments, it helps to know that this is normal and common and there is not much I can do about it, maybe as he go older it may get better
He does sleep well at night ( early riser though at 6) so over all not too bad

Mine is 6 months now and still refuses to sleep in the day much at all. Often only get 2 lots of 10-15 minutes in the day.

I’m very fed up of the helpful advice as I do get a good nights sleep most of the time now. Just frustrating when others get jobs done in the day time.

Keep going, you’re doing great! And you might get a good night sleeper out of the little naps

meepmoop · 23/04/2019 09:27

Mine used to wake up after 33 minutes exactly every time. It was almost impressive

Ratatatouille · 23/04/2019 09:33

Sorry to say but my daughter only ever managed 30 min naps until she was 18 months old when she dropped down to 1 nap per day. Then she would nap for an hour. Dropped naps altogether almost as soon as she turned 2 😩 She is just a crap sleeper. I've tried absolutely everything (except anything based around crying it out) and she just does her own sweet thing. Maybe my next one will be a sleeper 🤷‍♀️

Scorpion1984 · 23/04/2019 09:45

I am starting to think this whole sleep training things are just a MYTH
Every baby will do their own things no matter what you try
My eldest was a good day napper, she she stopped napping when she was two years, and it took her three years to sleep through the night! My son is a good night sleeper since 6 weeks, but day time naps are 32 minutes long!
Tried same tricks and routines with both, but they are wired like this, and there is no changing it!

Honestly they just do whatever my sister has twins treated exactly the
same. One would nap and sleep through perfectly the other one wouldn't sleep. Luck of the draw

violetrosie · 24/04/2019 09:46

My DD only ever napped 30 mins until she hit a year old. I could set my watch by them. You get good at doing an awful lot in 30 mins!

Ratatatouille · 24/04/2019 15:22

@Violetrosie or in my case, necking a quick brew and catching up on Poldark 😂
