Sudden waking!

Hi!
I have a 15-month-old son who has slept through the night since 12 weeks. We put him down awake every night and at naps and he settles himself to sleep. For the last few nights he goes to sleep at night as usual but after a couple of hours he wakes up and cries. When I go in to his room he instantly settles but as soon as I turn to leave he gets hysterical. The more I soothe him and leave the more hysterical he gets but I can't just leave him alone to cry! It takes around 1 hour to get him back to sleep and I m sure that only happens because he's exhausted himself crying! He is tired so it's not that he's not tired enough. He is teething (10 teeth at once!) but that hasn't seemed to bother him at all. Is this just separation anxiety or something more? I'm worried about getting him in a habit of waking up for cuddles or comfort from me but I can't see another way at the moment because I don't understand why he's doing it and why it's suddenly started. Please help!

This sounds like night terrors to me. We are in the same boat. The only way to came our DD is to pick her up. DD goes to sleep unaided at normal bedtime.

I have just posted a thread asking how we can break the pick up routine in the night as we think she might bed passed the night terrors but we are certainly not passed the wake ups!
