Random twitching and head thrashing

Anyone got any idea why our BB insists on turning his head from side to side quite vigorously and randomly hitting himself in the face...

I mean he has me as a dad, so I kinda understand the face palm, but it's not conducive to sleep :(

No but my son does this too and it drives me mad as he wakes himself up and then cries. He will vigorously rub his face against the matress just as he's seemingly nodded off and then gets upset. He will also do it on my arm if I'm rocking him to sleep. He's been doing it for the past 6 weeks or so :(
