Naps for 3 month old

My baby has never been a good napper. He won't nap unless he is moving in the pram, or properly put down in his crib. Since 1 week old he's not been like my NCT friend's babies who will happy drift in and out of naps among whatever they're doing, falling asleep on the playmat etc (jealous!).

Almost every nap is a battle. Believe me, I've tried everything. I'm trying to follow th4 advice given in a number of baby books regarding minimum napping/sleeping hours per day but he never seems to make it. We try either 3 naps including one linger one at lunchtime (has only ever happened twice!) or 4x 45 minutes naps (but it takes so long to get him to sleep, the fourth one rarely happens). I feel like I am spending all day trying to get him to nap! So what I'm asking is, are 3x 45min naps enough for a 3 month old? He sleeps really well at night; 7pm until 7:30am usually with one wakeup for a feed (around 5am-ish). But he does get cranky around 5pm... I guess tired from not having napped enough. Should I put him to bed a little earlier and let him just have 3 naps a day, or persevere with what I'm trying to do at the moment? I just feel my entire day is spent trying to get him to nap :(
