How much sleep does your 2 year old have?

DS has just turned 2. He is sleeping around 2/3 hours during the day as a lunchtime nap and then about 9/10 hours at night. I think he needs more nighttime sleep but he wakes at 5am no matter what time he goes to bed.

What are other 2 year olds doing?

Mine are 5 and 3 now but both dropped their naps before they were 2 and then slept 7-7 at night. Before dropping the nap both were at at 5am for the day. It took a week or so of no nap for the later mornings to start.

*up at 5am

He's having quite a long nap so that's why he's sleeping less at night.
12 hours sleep in total is fine.

Just turned 2. Has an hour to an hour and a half nap, then sleep between 11-12 hours at night. We've just bought a Gro Clock to try and stop some of the earlier wakings.

Between 1 and 2 hours nap and then 11-12 hours a night. It's my reward for him not sleeping through until 15 months. Grin

Mine sleeps 12 hours at night and for 30 minutes (sometimes) in the day. He doesn’t have a nap every day. I’d reduce the daytime nap to no more than an hour. This might not have the desired effect immediately, but probably will over time.

Mine does 6:45-5:30/6 and then a 1-2 hour nap. I have been wondering about dropping the nap to get him to sleep later

DS was 2 in August, a few months back we started limiting his nap to 1hr because it was effecting his night time sleep, he was getting up super early.

So now he has about 1hr nap and sleeps about 7.30 to 6/6.30 (or a rare 7am today!). Still has the occasional 5.30 right enough

ChipsAreLife · 18/11/2018 08:13

Mine has a 1.5 hour nap in the day and sleeps around 11 hours at night. I find if she doesn't nap well she sleeps worse at night!

The early waking is awful, ours just gradually stoped doing it after I had tried everything to change it!

overmydeadbody · 18/11/2018 08:17

1 hour nap after lunch and then eleven hours sleep from 7:30 till 6:30, with one wake up at around 4am for a cuddle.

Tfoot75 · 18/11/2018 08:19

Mine is 2.5 and sleeps approx 7-6.30, no regular daytime sleep for over 6 months. She is often very tired and varies between going to bed early, sleeping later, and going to sleep later or waking earlier, quite variable. Doesn’t regularly sleep through either. But overall same as my 5yo who slept 11-12 hours a night without naps from 18 months to around 4.5yo and now has 10.5 hours (8-6.30).

Jeffacake · 18/11/2018 08:22

He takes about an hour to drop off at night tome. We put him to bed at around 7pm but he chats to himself for ages.

We have to be out of the house at 7am on work days anyway so I don’t want him to sleep too much later, but 6:15 instead of 5am would be lovely!

I will try reducing the lunchtime nap but on my days off it’s a saviour as I can get some planning and marking done to save me doing as much at night!

In general at that age they need about 12 hours in 24 so it’s up to you how you attempt to ‘organise’ those 12 hours. For me, it was preferable to have them all at night but obviously it depends on you!

Orlande · 18/11/2018 08:25

You'll have to choose, long nap or early night - you can't have both!

I'd cut his nap to 90 minutes and put him to bed at 8.

Notmorewashing · 18/11/2018 08:27

Reduce nap to 1 hour max
