SOS - 1 month old with sleep problem!

Please help! My one month old seems colicky which I think might be adding to his sleeping problem i.e. he takes up to half an hour to settle & fall asleep in my arms, sometimes with fits of crying ( this is during the day) he doses off in my arms then I put him in his cot, & half an hour later he's awake & grumpy, this goes on throughout the day. After midnight feed he falls asleep straight away, & sleeps fine in his cot but then after dawn feed, when I put him back in his cot he grunts and wriggles and whines, until I pick him up & lie him on my chest until he wakes up for next feed. The only time he seems to really sleep well, with no whining etc. is in the car! What's going on & what can I do to rectify this?
P.S. I'm not getting much rest wuth his erratic sleeping.

Snowi my DS was a bit like this at 4 weeks, it is so young, try not to worry about it and don't think of it as something to rectify. Just try to rest when he rests, let him sleep on you if he needs to (I spent many days and eves on the sofa with DS asleep on me, TV remote and chocolate within close reach!) and don't worry, he is just getting used to the world and will soon settle down.

(Or develop a whole new load of sleep problems, like my DS, but that's a bridge to cross when you come to it!)

Does he bring up much wind? You could try infacol or similar if you think it is that.

Also if you think he has colic, try something like Infacol, and burping him well after every feed, this helped us.

Sounds pretty normal for 4 weeks.

At this age they do nothing but feed and grumble!!

It does get better.

I found with no2 she needed winding for AGES a good 30 mins before she settled.

Have you considered a sling during day?

I always found a walk with pram sent mine off,albeit temporarily.

Infacol sometimes help.

Would not consider it a sleep problem at this age,TBH .They settle as they get older.Make sure you try to sleep when dc does and don't take too much on.It is EXHAUSTING in those early days.Take care xxx

I'm sorry - but this is what 4 week old babies do. Try to relax about it - cat nap youself whenever you can - don't do anything at all you can possibly avoid except rest and feed and the next stage will be along before you know it. There really is nothing at all you can do to change behaviour in such a tiny baby - and tring will just make you tense and even more tired. That will make him tense and tired too. Have you thought of taking him into bed with you? A lot of people will recoil in horror, but it's often a good way for everyone to get more sleep.

sometimes they can take a bit longer to settle when they are over tired or over stimulated so make sure you quieten things down when it is nap time. At first I used to sing and rock dd when she was crying and tired but soon found that this just distracted her from going to sleep and made her worse.
