Baby not getting enough sleep

I am stressing myself out looking at 'how much sleep they need' charts. I have a 7 week old baby. Sometimes he gets about 17 hrs from midnight to midnight but often its less. Its such hard work getting him to nap - he fights it and he wont be transferred anywhere without waking up.
Today he has only managed 7hrs 30. He is asleep now - ive been trying aince 11.30 to get him to sleep.
I dont know what to do.

My baby was like this at 6/7 weeks. They say the film comes off their eyes at this stage and they are taking so much in they can't sleep as they're over whelmed etc. I was so worried I went to the GP who Almost laughed at me (really patronising) and said it's normal and just go with the flow.
My DD grew out of it after a few weeks - it is a phase you just need to ride out. Good luck

Sounds like my DD, now 2.5yo. She came out awake and stayed that way! She's always survived on a much smaller amount of sleep than those charts day. Down to one nap at 6 months, dropped that really early, and even now wakes up at the crack of dawn rearing to go! I have 6 week old DS now and the difference between their sleep patterns at that age is staggering. So it may be that your baby is just not one of the very sleepy ones, or as pp said, it could be a phase. Will they sleep in the buggy? A baby carrier? Car? Do whatever works to get them to sleep, as sleep breeds sleep at that age. Even if they'll only sleep on you, just go with it. At that age they're not going to want to be in a cot if they can sleep snuggled up on you instead! Have you tried a dummy?
