Are we doing the wrong thing? And other sleep related questions

DS (nearly 5m) overnight can be a good sleeper, however if we put him down at 8pm he will wake at 4 thinking its morning (having woken up at 11, 1 and probably 3). He then seems to get very upset with himself as he knows he shouldn't be awake as its dark. He will try to sleep more but wake upset every 20 mins. We've moved his bedtime gradually to 10pm and now hes waking once or twice for food then up for the day at 8ish which is much nicer for us. Is this ok? I keep reading babies should have an 8pm bedtime but that means we're shattered!

Also a few questions

  • at what age do babies have the cognitive ability to be taught to self settle? I have no interest in CC or CIO
  • is feeding to sleep really that bad a habit? It works so well for him, otherwise he just cant be soothed especially in the day
  • how can i teach him to nap in his cot not on me (although i do love his cuddles)
