Stair gate on bedroom door ??

We are putting DD in a 'big girl bed' after Christmas so need to start buying the stuff. She will be 2.5 years and currently in a cot.

Do I need to put a gate on her door? There is one at the top of the stairs already. should I just let her come out of her room (preferably into ours) I have a feeling I might find her in the bathroom playing with the toilet 😩 she's never been a climber (touch wood) if that helps ?

could you put the handle on the bathroom door higher up? So she can’t reach it? Use nightlights to guide her into your room and leave your door open and hers closed.

We had a gate on DS room at about that age - to avoid night wandering, and also because his room opens right next to top of stairs but we didn't want the stairs gated all night. Worked well.

We used gates on bedroom doors once they were out of the cot. Once their room was safe we didn't have to worry that during the night that they would hurt themselves, particularly in the bathroom. Think we all slept easier.

Can't remember now but think the gate stayed on their door til about age 4! Never tried to climb though.

We did because the first few weeks in his big bed led to a phase of early waking then coming in to our room to mess around.

Ahh thanks everyone will get ordering a gate ! 😀

I wouldn't be comfortable locking DS in his room, can't really say why, it just wouldn't feel right to me. We have a gate on the stairs, and a monitor so we hear if he gets up, and can go resettle him. He ocationaly comes through to our room first thing in on a morning but mostly will just shout for us when he wakes up.

We just had the gate at the top of the stairs. Didn't feel the need to put one at the door too

We put small bolts on other doors and just a gate at top of stairs.. Mine was toilet trained by then and wanted to give him full access to toilet.

SunnySomer · 25/10/2018 20:47

Same as veryberrycherry: DS was toilet trained so needed access to the bathroom - stairgate at the top of the stairs worked better for us

tentothree · 25/10/2018 20:57

If mine were getting up in the night to use the toilet aged 3 or whatever, one of us would be getting up anyway to keep an eye, so would open the (door) gate for them. Wouldn't have been able to reach the light switch or taps etc in the bathroom.

That said, they rarely got up so maybe would have felt different if was all the time!

Good idea by baby was always playing in the toilet & filling it with my toiletries
