sleeping on front

I know I know that all the advice says don't put the babe to sleep on his front but he likes it! - and so does our v. experienced night helper! (The rolling baby is the boy one of boy-girl twins, five and a half months old). Do I really need to roll him back onto his back every time he rolls onto his front? Can anyone make me feel better about this?!!! Nervous...

No, once he can roll himself over it's safe to leave him as he will have the strength and head control to move. All the other safety issues remain: cool room, not too many blankets, no smoking etc. If he's not in a sleeping bag, now's the time to introduce one.

Sorry to hijack your thread accordiongirl but have been wondering about this myself: My DS is 1 month old & terribly colicky & windy, what is the general consensus out there of putting him on his front to sleep as this is when he sleeps more soundly - on his front on my chest?!?

Snowi, could you try letting him go to sleep on his chest while you keep an eye on him, then turn him over after 15 mins or so and leave? Having said that, I do know a surprising number of people who have put their newborns to sleep on their tummy on a firm surface - because they just can't go to sleep on their backs (startle reflex wakes them as they drop off). I think it is more common than you would think. Nerve-racking though.

I have always put my children on their front from day 1, but thats my choice never done them any harm dd1 is now 16yrs and ds2 is 10 mths, thriving well, once they can lift their heads they should be fine but always slept in the same room so I could monitor thm when they were younger

MY DS slept on his back for 5 months and was awful all night, we turned him on his front and he slept thru. He is now 14mo's and still he wont go to sleep on his back.

He often turns in the night, and ends up in all sorts of positions.

I've always slept dd 4yrs and ds2 (12 wks) on their fronts. and they've all slept well and settled easily.
They slept by my bed, both were breastfed, I never smoked and other risk factors were non existent so I took a choice based on what I calculated was a low risk versus sleep...
However it is contrary to cot death prevention advice.
But also once a baby is able to get himself there then you are ok to leave them

my ds1 was a back sleeper and ds2 is a tummy sleeper, basically from day one. He would scream the house down if put on his back and was very happy and slept extremely well on his tummy - still does at 18months.

you could buy a movement sensor to put under the mattress. It gave me peace of mind to see it blipping away when LO was sleeping on her front (suffered reflux when tiny, wouldn't sleep on her back at all really). Oh, I got the tommee tippee one.

The girl twin sleeps delicately on her side. It's been a little tricky to negotiate this with the night helper. Thanks again, love to you all X
