Gro clock

Hi just wondering if anyone has had any luck using a gro clock with a 2year old? Our previously brilliant sleeper now wakes before 5am and won’t go back to sleep he is getting exhausted though the day as he now refused to nap also. Wondering if it might help him understand it’s still bed time or if it’s a waste of money? 😬 thanks x

We used a Gro clock for my DS, he was 3 though. It worked well, didn't stop him waking up but he knew he wasn't to come and wake anyone else up until the sunshine appears. Not sure if a 2 year old would have the self control to stay in their room until the sunshine comes on? It's worth a try though

We got one when DD was 2 and a half. It comes with a wee book which helps to explain that you have to stay in bed until the sun comes up. We initially set it for about 5 minutes after she usually woke up so she wouldnt have to wait too long and would still get lots of praise for staying in bed. Then we gradually moved it to 7.30. she's really good at staying in her room and playing quietly until the sun comes up - so much so that we once forgot to set the clock and she stayed in her room until 9.15 before shouting to tell us that the sun was taking too long!

I swear by gro clocks, ours were closer to 3 and you do have to be consistent about putting them back to bed until the sun is up, but you can adjust the time so if they are struggling to stay in bed until 7am you could set it for 6 to start with and 6.10 the next day etc and just praise for staying in bed/ in his/her room until the sun comes up.

Thank you for the advice! I might give it a try we are all getting pretty tired on his current routine so we can’t loose anything! 🤣

Never worked for mine who just stayed awake to see if they could catch the sun coming up on the bloody things. When they got older and could recognise numbers a bit - a bloody large post it note with the number 7 and an arrow pointing to the right digit on a cheapo clock radio got them to stay in bed looking at books until the appointed time and was much much cheaper!

I got a gro clock for DS just before he turned 3 as he'd started waking up at 4.30 & that was him up for the day & expecting us to be up to. I was pregnant with DD at the time & wanted him out of the habit before she came & he started waking her up too. Initially we set it for 5.30 & then moved it on 15 minutes per week until he was at 7am. The first morning he came in before the sun came up so I sent him back to his room where he played quietly for a while and then over the monitor I heard him shouting at the clock, 'come on sun, time to get up, why are you taking so long' 😂. He still wakes up early now at 4 but normally stays playing quietly. He ignores the clock but insists on us setting it every night!

I've just sold mine after my 3yr old hated it. He was so used to sleeping in darkness that the light from the clock kept him awake so he'd put duvet over his head to block it out then wake up sweating.

Started using it with our DS at 2 and a half and was an absolute godsend! Took a few weeks for him to get it but for us it's been an essential piece of kit and saved my sanity!!

Works brilliantly for us but he was quite close to 3 I think. Got it immediately though so maybe earlier would have been ok.

TooMinty · 15/10/2018 20:44

Didn't work on either of mine and my friend's DS threw his down the stairs! But it does work for some people so worth a punt. You can still use it as a night light...
