Help - newborn “mucous” or reflux??

Hi all,

DD is 4 day’s old and I’m a first time mum. She won’t sleep on her back: she falls asleep on me after feeding, we transfer her sleepily to her Moses basket, and then 10 minutes later she’s spitting-up/burping and crying.

We’ve propped up her mattress (suggested by midwife), used rolled-up towels to make her feel supported and tried burping her CONSTANTLY... but again, it’s 3am and she’s sleeping on me! Winding her seems to do nothing (Although we do hear her burping etc)

Multiple midwives/health visitors have said “Yeh, Caesarian babies often have lots of mucous on their chests - it’ll go away with feeding so don’t worry”

How can I get her to sleep on something other than me??

This cluster feeding would be a lot easier if I could nap between feeds!!

Hi! Congratulations. For now it's probably mucus, or at least it's probably a bit early to say reflux. My 2nd and 3rd babies were born quickly and also were very mucusy as a result. It should ease but yeah the noises are quite something.
Hope you're doing ok, the lack of a break is very hard isn't it - probably doesn't help to hear that it's normal for them to not let you put them down at night!

Have you given swaddling and warming the mattress with a hot water bottle a go?

Would you invest in a sleepyhead? They are amazing and worth the expense. Might give you a couple of hours between feeds .

Google 4th trimester - your baby just wants warmth and security, which means sleeping on you!

Neither of mine slept apart from me, I had a Chicco Next2Me crib, and they both spent all day in a sling. I would recommend sling for daytime naps, a stretchy Moby wrap would work well at this stage.

My 6 day old is like this too, so offering my sympathy but unfortunately I have no advice. I will be trying a sling through the day and looking into a cocoon support as well. Here's hoping it gets better soon!

If it is reflux they recommend holding the baby upright for 20mins after each feed. Perhaps try that?

Thankfully she doesn’t have any other signs of mucus... no blocked nose or even sniffling.

We’ve bought a Babymoov and made our own sleephead with towels under her mattress cover...

@ShackUp I have a Snuzpod - just like the Chicco - but she won’t lie flat in it! (Although she did for 45 mins this morning which made me slightly giddy/hopeful!)

It basically means I’m awake from 1-6am as she’s cluster feeding at the mo. Pretty exhausting.
