Cot refusing 4 month old

My 4 month old has suddenly started -screaming bloody murder- refusing to go in his crib at night. I have a next to me with side up, my mattress moves so can't drop side, and 3 out of 4 nights in the last week as soon as he is put in there he starts screaming. Last night I spent almost 3 hours trying to settle him abd then transfer to cot (probably 5-6 attempts), everytime within 3 seconds of being put in the crib the same heart wrenching screams. I've tried shush/pat to no effect.

Currently he is sleeping in my bed the correct way on whilst I sleep across it at the foot of the bed to avoid rolling over him in my sleep. Obviously this isn't a long term solution. Any ideas to get him back to settling in his crib?
