Extend 10mo naps

How did you get your baby to extend his naps at this age? I managed to get him to do it 4 months till 10 months by patting between sleep cycles and he worked it out and starting connecting them. but that’s not working anymore. and he’s now forgotten. Its been 6 weeks of crap naps and I have one overtired baby who screams when he wakes from Nap and won’t go back!

There's a massive sleep regression 8-10 mo so it might be that it'll start to improve again soon.

FWIW we just kept doing that and now DS will go down in his cot and sleep 2 hours without any intervention now at 14.5mo

Sorry do u mean u kept patting? Or just did nothing and he started napping?
It’s just weird coz he slept perfectly for naps 4-10 months. Then I thought it’s regression but it’s been 6 weeks! And his nights r fine?! So why not his naps! I keep plonking him in the car for a short car nap end of day but I can’t do it every day!!! Plus he’s started screaming when I do it now so not doing it anymore!

patted if needed but to be honest he's started just doing it himself and going to sleep in his cot with less and less help from us.

Regressions can last as long as 6 weeks or even more!.

But to be honest, I'd take the night's sleep if I could have it. It's rare when i'm up less than 3 times...

I know I agree re the night! I was just spoilt with 3 hours or nap time to do stuff around house and now it’s an hr plus an hr of patting and a cranky baby! And im just waiting for the nights to go wrong too!

Have you tried extending his awake time a bit? I have a 10 month old and the awake time for that age is 3-4 hours so you could try pushing him a bit (say, more towards the 4 hour mark) and seeing if he will nap for a bit longer?

It might be but it's worth a try! I just look for signs of tiredness but I find having a "guide" quite useful and usually he's telling me he's tired at around 3-3.5 hours, however if I try and put him down and it doesn't work I get him back up and try again. I've also found that even if he's had a short morning nap, I can still get him to last 3-4 hours until the next one. I feel your pain though, it's so frustrating!

It’s sooo frustrating! esp as I had months of a perfectly napping baby! I suspect he’s never going to nap again right
I just hope he copes with it and gets used to it coz ow he’s not very easy come bed time :(

It's so annoying when they nap well and all of a sudden it changes. Another poster mentioned the 8-10 sleep regression so that could be part of it too, I think their sleep can go haywire up until 12 months and then it's meant to settle down (fingers crossed!) Hope it gets better soon!

Thanks yest he did 2 beautiful naps yay! And then was up at 530am!!!! Can’t win!

My son's just turned 11 months but at 10 months dropped a nap. He slept 6-6 at night without fail, 90 mins in the morning and 90 mins in the afternoon. I changed his bedtime to 7pm, so he woke at 7am, then put him for his first nap after 4 hours so 11am. He sleeps for about 2.5 hours in the morning then doesn't sleep again until bedtime. I adjust his sleep times around what he wants to do, but my mum who's had six kids said when they start to adjust their naps, move their bedtime first. Possibly worth a try.

I do 7-730 bedtime and he does 11 hours at night usually. What would u do to bedtime?

Sorry posted too soon! I'd move the bedtime forward slightly every day until it was about 6.30, then hope he still wakes at 6.30 so gets a full 12 hours in. Sleep promotes sleep, I'd then expect him to sleep another 2 hours during the day.
