Self settling to sleep

If your little one self settles to sleep (not self soothing in terms of crying and then eventually falling asleep, just going into cot and drifting off independently after wriggling/chatting to themselves for a bit), how did you find this out? Did it happen by accident e.g. falling asleep on play may, or did you start putting them down and leaving them, and seeing what happened?

DS is 19 weeks and he will send himself back off to sleep if he wakes in the night and doesn’t want a feed, for all other sleeps he feeds to sleep. I’m not desperate for him to be doing it, I’m quite happy as we are at the minute, I just wondered whether I could be maybe seeing if he can do it his own?
