Are cot bumpers safe to use for a 11 week old baby?

kbaby, I don't think you're meant to use them until babe is 12mths, however once DS started crashing into cot bars we decided to put one on on, he was 6mths.
I do know of mums who have always had bumpers on the cot right from the word go.
I think the reason for not using them is overheating and the risk of cot death.
