Controlled crying with two year old?

Has anyone done this with a two year old?
I’ve just failed miserably tonight and after an hour of going in at regular intervals the hysterical screaming has got to me and now I’m sat holding her hand again.
Does it / should it work at this age? How do you bear the crying? Have I made her more clingy now?
Any other tips for how to help her learn to fall asleep alone at this age. I cannot do the whole sitting holding her hand for an hour or more every night any more.

What happens at bedtime? Do you usually just hold her hand to sleep? I for one don’t really see the inconvenience of this as some people do - can you wait until she learns to go to sleep on her own?

Yes I have been sitting next to her bed holding her hand, rubbing her back etc. I wouldn’t mind if it only took 10 mins or so but it is taking over an hour. I have an older DD as well and am often on my own with them in the evening and don’t want to have to leave her alone for such a long time. And I need some time back in the evening. The way things are at the moment I am not finished with bedtimes until 9.00-9.30pm then have the usual evening housework/morning prep stuff to do. I have to be up at 6am to shower etc before the youngest wakes up and I’m pretty much on my last legs now!
