9 month old multiple night wakings

DS (9 months) has never been a great sleeper but over the last couple of months it’s been getting worse and worse. He goes down fine in his cot at 7 – awake; usually without a dummy but sometimes with. Then between 8 and 9 he will wake up standing up and screaming, usually settling with cuddles and a dummy. Then the same about an hour later. We are not usually able to settle him at this time so bring him into our bed where he eventually goes to sleep. He will sleep until around 1 when he has a feed. Then he may wake up 2-3 more times crying after that, but usually settles with cuddles and a dummy.

Does anyone know why he may be waking up so much? I’ve tried gripe water (which always gets him to burp if he has air – this doesn’t seem to be the problem). He has a teddy that he likes to sleep with. I’ve tried giving him water when he wakes. His cot is in our room, but he wakes before we go to bed so it can’t be us waking him up. I don’t think he is too hot or too cold. He stops crying after a while if I pick him up. I have tried patting him, sitting by his cot, etc, and he still cries. We live on the equator so it’s dark from around 6:45 to 6:15 so it’s not light that’s the problem. Any ideas?

Our second child did this until about 14 months and now he's sleeping through finally. Not sure why.. we put it down to wind, being hungry, teething! But yeah some babies are like this, it will get better.

Thanks. I guess we will just have to wait it out!
