How do you know if baby is sleeping

FTM here and now have a new worry...whether my little boy is actually sleeping at night.

I know he's asleep when he first goes down as it takes me a while to drop off to sleep, my worry is after he wakes for a feed and goes back into the cot does he stay asleep? I fall asleep pretty quickly at this point but if I'm asleep I have no idea if he is!

He wakes up about 7am for a feed but is usually yawning a lot, does this mean he isn't sleeping?

How old is your son? Mine is 3 months and if he is awake in his cot he doesn't stay quiet for more than a few minutes before he starts 'chatting' to himself and then he ups it to grumbling then crying when he can no longer entertain himself and wants someone to come and sooth him/pick him up. Also yawning upon waking is not always a sign of tiredness. Babies have a lot of the sleep hormone melatonin (prettt sure that isn't spelt right) still in their system when they first wake up and this could explain the yawning. My DS always has his best/longest nap in the morning and I out that down to the sleep hormone.

He's 9 weeks old. Had no idea about the hormone! Explains why he has a good nap in the morning!
