Stop cuddling 8 mo to sleep - bad back

So DS has been self settling for a few months right up until our holiday where no suprise, he hates his travel cot, so I pretty much fed to sleep to stop him waking up the whole place.

It took only 24 hours to knock the feed to sleep on the head back home and he now is back to feeding every 4 hours ish in the night so bed at 7pm and 2x feeds at 12ish and 4ish. Now however he wants a cuddle and laid down asleep. I have no problem with this whatsoever, he isnt waking for it (it hasn't impaired his sleep) and i appreciate hes going through a growth spurt and may be this separation anxiety thing. BUT my back cant handle holding him for the 5mins. I have been trying to put him down drowsy with maybe 50% success rate at the mo (he cries if he startles. shushing doesnt work and leaving him means he screams) but each failure means another pick up. Ouch! I've tried sitting in the nursing chair but similarly when I stand I go through the same motions.

Not sure if anyone has any advice? Gentle gradual retreat (very little crying) worked great before but it took a while. I guess I need to push through. Daddy cant help atm.
