Sleepyhead frustrations!

I wish I didn’t know the thing existed! We’ve been given a Sleepyhead Deluxe by a friend and newborn sleeps so well in it and considerably less well in anything else. I can’t use it for overnight because of all I’ve read about it not being approved as a safe sleep environment. I have no point to this post other than sharing how frustrating it is to have to choose the options that give me less sleep! Grrrrr.

You can use it overnight if you read all the information and make an informed choice.

I’ve just sat and read all the stuff on their website - all the FAQ’s etc - and I can’t...I’m too risk averse. I just want to grumble about it. He does seem to really sink down into it.

It's fine overnight. Gets a bit warm in this weather though. (It's not a 'sleep positioner' like other products that have been potentially found unsafe)

Agree with the above. As with everything in parenting- it’s about doing your research and making a decision that is right for you and your baby. The sleepyhead if full breathable and is not the type of sleep aid that was associated with the recent scare. DS slept in it right up untill he was 10 months old and it greatly improved things for us!

I am putting DS in the grand for the first time tonight. Hes been in the deluxe since he was about a month old. Best thing we brought. Its not a sleep positioner

Hey I totally get where you're coming from and you have to do what you feel is right for you and your baby. But just to share my experience, I too have been using the deluxe since around 1 month old, before that our DD wouldn't go down in crib or moses basket and so with constantly lifting her and putting her back down with the crying I was practically holding her all night. Anyway, she sleeps in the sleepyhead well now for all naps and overnight. I tend to use just a thin cellular blanket draped below her waist so she doesn't get too hot, and I dress her in long sleeved vest. She's 3 months now and will soon be too big for it. We're seriously considering upgrading to the grande one since it's served us so well so far. In fact she's snoring away in it right now

Both my daughters has slept in it and I also have the next size up. Best thing ever!!!

My daughter slept in it overnight, I read all the information and was happy using it overnight.

We used it overnight. If you’re that concerned get a sensor mat to go underneath it.

We used it overnight with DD2. In my view it's safer than falling asleep holding your baby because they won't go to sleep otherwise.

Ordered a monitor with a sensor - was going to get one at some point anyway as haven’t bought a monitor yet. Was going to wait till he went in his own room.
I’ve thought about this the last few days and decided the risks of sleepyhead overnight vs. trying to sit up when exhausted vs. co-sleeping must be around the same level?

What do you think the risks of the sleepyhead overnight are? I’ve looked into it and it isn’t recommended by the Lullaby Trust because it isn’t flat, but I can’t see any positive evidence it is actually unsafe, or that it has been linked to any infant deaths at all.

Significantly less risky than falling asleep holding baby in my opinion. Co-sleeping risks depends on the nature of the co-sleeping.

You must do what is right for you but I honestly think it is fine to use the sleepyhead overnight.

I guess I feel the risks are connected with the raised sides being close to the face therefore less ventilation/air movement means an increase of c02 near the face. Air being re-breathed. Which is a known risk factor o believe.

The Lullaby Trust won't recommend any product like this as they obviously won't test on newborns.

I figured baby is lying on its back so unlikely to turn its head so far to the side that it's against the side of the Sleephead. Even if it does it's fully breathable. Less dangerous than baby sleeping in your arm where it's more likely to overheat and/or slip into a dangerous position.

I was happy to take the risk after weighing everything up but every family has to decide for themselves.
